Belt Sander Functions

Belt sander has a strong sanding effect on wood. However, belt sander is not often used in fine woodworking, it is usually only used in the initial stage of wood sanding, or for rapid removal of materials. Sometimes belt sander is also used to remove paint from wood. If you want to get a completely smooth surface, you can use belt sander with fine sandpaper.

In most cases, such as furniture manufacturing or other similar projects, other sanding tools are used to shape them in a fairly precise manner. The advantage of belt sander is to quickly remove a large amount of excess part from the surface of a piece of wood.

Belt Sander Types

Handheld/Stationary
Belt sander can move on material in a handheld manner, or it can be fixed to move the material to belt. Stationary belt sanders are sometimes installed on workbench. At this time, they are bench sanders. Stationary sanders are usually combined with disc sanders.
Electric/Pneumatic
Electric belt sander consists of an electric motor that rotates a pair of drums on which a continuous ring of sandpaper is installed. Corded belt sander is powered by 110V/220V/240V voltage. Cordless belt sanders are usually powered by lithium batteries. Common power supply voltages are 14V, 16.8V, 21V and so on. Pneumatic sander (air sander) uses compressed air as power.
Wide-belt sander
Wide-belt sander is a large-scale sander, similar to planer, but larger than a planer. Wide belt sander uses a large sand belt head instead of the shaping head of planer. It requires air from a separate source to tighten the belt. It is used in rough sanding or processing for large surfaces.
Belt and Disc Sander
Belt and disc sander is a type of bench sander. It is a combination of belt sander and disc sander. Belt & disc sander consists of a sanding belt, a sanding disc and workbenches.

Using a Belt Sander

Before using belt sander, make sure that operator's clothes will not interfere with operation. Belt sander usually has larger torque, so loose clothes are not suitable for belt sander operator's work clothes.
Start belt sander and wait until it reaches full speed before starting operation. During operation, hold handle with one hand and place the other hand on material to maintain stability. Move gently forward to lower the belt sander so that the rear roller touches wood first. Then place the rest part of sanding surface down on the wood.
Sanding belt will grab the wood and push belt sander forward, so you must hold the sander tightly to control it. Sand as much as possible along the grain of wood and do not stay in one place all the time.
When using belt sander, it is best to operate with slight pressure and small amplitude. Do not push down hard to tear the wood. Just leave some indentations and repair them later.
